Maximizing Your Memory – From Community Presentation to CEU

Sophia Heftler, RN, MSN, CALA, CMC, CDP® has given our free community presentation, Maximizing Your Memory, numerous times in the past year. Why is that? What I have been told is that it is an upbeat topic that is pro-active and offers ways to improve quality of life. The program covers what memory is and how memory works, as well as what is normal memory loss and what is not. It offers tips on avoiding memory loss. It touches on when memory loss should be investigated further, and covers current medications used for memory loss, Alzheimer’s and the various other forms of dementia.
When I present the list of topics for someone to choose, the topic of Maximizing Your Memory has been chosen most often. And each time it is presented, it gets improved upon. So much so, that there is now enough information gathered on memory that is has been submitted for approval as a 2.0 credit continuing education unit (CEU) course for nurses and soon will be submitted for social worker approval.
When approved, we hope to offer this course to nurses and social workers who are working in hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and wherever nurses and social workers may work with older adults in Bergen and Passaic Counties in New Jersey and Rockland County in New York. At Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management, we think it is an important topic and the information should be available to everyone, both seniors and those working with them.

How to Make the Decision to Enter a Nursing Home

When children see their parents failing in one way or another, whether due to signs of dementia or an illness that leaves them incapacitated, the first thought seems to be a move to a nursing home. Although there are many good nursing homes that are very caring and skilled, a nursing home does not need to be the first or only choice in living arrangement. Sophia Heftler of Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management has used her twenty years of working in elder care to develop a continuing education program called The Turning Point. Her experience as a Director of Nursing at a Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bergen County and as an Executive Director at an assisted living facility in Passaic County brought her a wealth of knowledge as to what should go into making the decision on when entering a nursing home is the best choice. This CEU, which gives 2.0 credits for nurses, social workers, Certified Assisted Living Administrators (CALA) and Licensed Nursing Home Administrators (LNHA), will be presented at Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus, NJ at 9:00AM on Thursday, April 7. The general public is also welcome. Come for breakfast and learn the key reasons why the elderly currently enter nursing facilities and factors affecting their decision. Call (201) 225-7674 to make a reservation.

Alzheimer’s Statistics Shock
March 14, 2011 at 10:30 am | Posted in Pat Linard, PR | Leave a commentTags: Aging, Alzheimer's Association, CEU, Education, Support
Sophia Heftler and I visited a local hospital today. Sophia gave her CEU presentation on Dementia and the Hospitalized Patient to nurses, social workers and discharge planners there. We were invited by a local nursing and rehabilitation center. I often accompany Sophia on these events so that I can help her set up, tell a little about our practice, answer any questions and generally offer moral support. I’ve heard this presentation many times before and every time I hear it again, I learn something new. Dementia is such a difficult issue for our elderly now and will be for us in the future. When Sophia started her presentation with some statistics, she mentioned that someone new develops Alzheimer’s every 73 seconds. A shocking number if you stop to think about. When I came back to the office and looked at my email, there was one waiting for me from the Alzheimer’s Association. And with it came a revised statistic. Someone new develops Alzheimer’s every 69 seconds! I’m glad that the Alzheimer Association is working so diligently towards a cure since it is the only major illness that does not have a cure right now. What really hit home is that if Alzheimer’s was a corporation, it would be bigger than any we have now and that includes Wal Mart and Exxon Mobil which represent billions of dollars.
These statistics are pretty shocking. What can we all do about it? Well for starters, we can support the Alzheimer’s Association whether with dollars or as a volunteer. They have many events that are worthy of support and can be fun, too. They hold an annual Polo Match in May which could be a fun family event. And there are walks all around the state of New Jersey, in Bergen County, Passaic County and all through the state and everywhere else for that matter. What an easy way to support the important research and development that they do. It’s like investing in our future.

Dementia Education at Distinctive Care

We’re not just about geriatric care management at Distinctive Care. We’re also about teaching and learning about dementia so that we can provide the best geriatric care possible. Here is a sampling of our educational programs that are happening at Distinctive Care. If you’re from Bergen or Passaic Counties in New Jersey or Rockland County in New York, call us and we’ll teach you all about dementia care, too.
Distinctive Care is offering another new program! Sophia Heftler, RN, CMC, CALA and CDP® (Certified Dementia Practitioner) is available for an in-service entitled Dementia and Validation Therapy which is perfect for staff at nursing homes and other facilities for the older adult. This 45 minute presentation gives an overview of dementia, risk factors, and current treatment options. It explains the use of validation therapy to enter the world of the patient with dementia as a means of dealing with and managing behavioral issues. Call Pat at 551-580-5639 for information or to book a class.
Sophia will be speaking to the Upper Saddle River Foundation on the topic of Benefits of Exercise in Preventing/Slowing Dementia this Thursday, March 10. So what can be learned from this seminar?
Sophia will present research that shows that not only does exercise reduce the risks of physical problems such as heart disease, but it also slows down memory loss as a person ages. The amount of confidence and pleasure of appropriate exercise also boosts the mind and spirit and even walking can provide improvements in memory, language, and visual skills. It’s bound to be an informative and interesting presentation which we would be glad to present to your church or community group.
Dementia and the Hospitalized Patient will be presented at The Hospital for Special Surgery this Wednesday by Sophia. This 2.0 credit CEU for nurses, social workers, Certified Assisted Living Administrators and Licensed Nursing Home Administrators covers the different forms of dementia, the stages of Alzheimer’s disease, diagnostics for diagnosis, current pharmacological treatment and non-pharmacological symptom management. The effects of hospitalization on elderly patients with dementia and techniques for dealing with dementia patients, as well as community resources, are also reviewed.
So, as you can see, dementia is an important topic with Distinctive Care!

Unfortunately Distinctive Care of Ridgewood, NJ, here in Bergen County, had to cancel our last CEU presentation at Sunrise Senior Living of Cresskill on February 16 due to snow. We have now scheduled another CEU presentation at Sunrise of Cresskill on another topic for Tuesday, March 16. The Fears and Angst of Incontinence in the Elderly will cover the statistics of incontinence and cultural attitudes towards incontinence in the elderly. It reviews the barriers for treatment and the issues of psychological impact and quality of life. Current treatment options and nursing interventions are also covered.
