Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia present a very difficult challenge for those who are caregivers. Dealing with the difficult behaviors so often associated with dementia can be devastatingly stressful and frustrating. Communication skills and understanding of the situation are integral. A positive tone for interaction, no matter the circumstances, goes a long way in handling these situations. For those who are challenged with the difficult behaviors often displayed by dementia patients, Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management of Ridgewood, NJ offers a free seminar. This seminar offers tips on how to deal with those behaviors, from asking simple questions to breaking down activities in a series of steps. This seminar will also explore how to keep a sense of humor in an almost impossible situation. A sense of humor is so critical in so many ways and in so many situations, but especially in caregiving.

This seminar will be held at in the auditorium at Bergen Regional Medical Center, 230 E. Ridgewood Avenue, Paramus, NJ on Wednesday May 25 at 6pm. This free seminar is open to all residents, whether they live in Bergen County, or nearby Passaic and Rockland Counties. The information can help whether you are providing in-home care or helping a loved one in an assisted living or nursing home. The seminar lasts about an hour and a light dinner will be served. Call (201) 967-4988 or register online at Bergen Regional.

Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management serves Bergen, Passaic, Rockland and Orange County with nurses licensed in New Jersey and New York. Alzheimer’s Association Annual Conference

I attended the Alzheimer’s Association Annual Conference this past Friday. I attend the conference every year and, as usual, this one did not disappoint!

From the opening remarks to the final elective workshop that I attended, the day was amazing.

I thought the most interesting session was presented by the keynote speaker, Cameron J. Camp, PhD. Called “I’m Still Here ®: A Montesessori Based Approach to Providing Care to Persons with Dementia,” the session provided the attendees with many interventions regarding activity planning that enable the caregiver to avoid pharmacological approaches. Basically, he reminded everyone of the important fact that those living with dementia have the same needs as those without dementia. The thing that really excited me about this presentation is the fact that so much of what he was talking about with regard to dementia care are practices that Distinctive Care already has in place. He spoke about how persons living with dementia have the need to feel self-worth, express one’s thoughts and feelings, and have a sense of belonging and accomplishment. He stresses the importance of “destigmatizing” dementia and “embracing the person in the person with dementia.” As I sat there listening I wanted to jump up and shout, “This is what Distinctive Care does every single day!” and to tell him the story about my lunch and shopping trip with one of our Clients which took place earlier in the week.

The workshop I attended was “Best Practices: Creating Therapeutic Activities for Quality Dementia Care” with the expectation that I would be able to provide our Care Managers with even more interventions to ensure a high quality of life for all our Clients. I was not disappointed and will certainly apply what I learned, and our Care Managers will also implement the assessment techniques and care planning information I shared with them in their practice.

I have so many new ideas that I can’t wait to implement and already am excitedly planning for next year’s program.

Distinctive Care is a care management practice that takes special pride in the care we provide for our Clients living with dementia every day with specialized, individualized care planning for each individual Client to address their specific needs and to improve their quality of life. If you have a loved-one living with dementia and are at the point where you feel you need help with your caregiving and are not sure where to turn, please contact us in our Ridgewood, New Jersey office to see if we can assist you and your family in providing the highest quality of life possible for your loved one which in turn will provide you with a more satisfying role as a caregiver. We assist families in Bergen, Passaic and northwest New Jersey and families in Rocland, Orange and Westchester counties in New York. We can be reached at 201-857-5283.

One of the aspects I love about my job as Office Manager at Distinctive Care is the opportunity to learn something new every day. I learn from my colleagues, our clients and the many professionals we encounter as we strive to provide the best geriatric care possible. My boss, Sophia, is very committed to furthering the education of all staff members. We have had in-service training in our office on a variety of topics, and all of us are encouraged to attend conferences and seminars on a regular basis.

In addition, Distinctive Care goes a step further. With our deep desire to improve the quality of care available to all seniors, we are committed to providing continuing education programs for health professionals ranging from hospital nurses to home health aides to social workers and many others. These programs undergo a rigorous certification process by multiple state and national agencies, and are approved for us to issue continuing education credits, which are required in order to remain current in many fields. We believe that by sharing the expertise we have developed in two decades of geriatric care, we are helping to improve the lives of many seniors beyond our client base, as well as assisting the professionals who care for them.

We also offer an extensive array of programs for community groups and organizations free of charge, as a community service.

We’re not just about geriatric care management at Distinctive Care. We’re also about teaching and learning about dementia so that we can provide the best geriatric care possible. Here is a sampling of our educational programs that are happening at Distinctive Care. If you’re from Bergen or Passaic Counties in New Jersey or Rockland County in New York, call us and we’ll teach you all about dementia care, too.

Distinctive Care is offering another new program! Sophia Heftler, RN, CMC, CALA and CDP® (Certified Dementia Practitioner) is available for an in-service entitled Dementia and Validation Therapy which is perfect for staff at nursing homes and other facilities for the older adult. This 45 minute presentation gives an overview of dementia, risk factors, and current treatment options. It explains the use of validation therapy to enter the world of the patient with dementia as a means of dealing with and managing behavioral issues. Call Pat at 551-580-5639 for information or to book a class.

Sophia will be speaking to the Upper Saddle River Foundation on the topic of Benefits of Exercise in Preventing/Slowing Dementia this Thursday, March 10. So what can be learned from this seminar?

Sophia will present research that shows that not only does exercise reduce the risks of physical problems such as heart disease, but it also slows down memory loss as a person ages. The amount of confidence and pleasure of appropriate exercise also boosts the mind and spirit and even walking can provide improvements in memory, language, and visual skills. It’s bound to be an informative and interesting presentation which we would be glad to present to your church or community group.

Dementia and the Hospitalized Patient will be presented at The Hospital for Special Surgery this Wednesday by Sophia. This 2.0 credit CEU for nurses, social workers, Certified Assisted Living Administrators and Licensed Nursing Home Administrators covers the different forms of dementia, the stages of Alzheimer’s disease, diagnostics for diagnosis, current pharmacological treatment and non-pharmacological symptom management. The effects of hospitalization on elderly patients with dementia and techniques for dealing with dementia patients, as well as community resources, are also reviewed.

So, as you can see, dementia is an important topic with Distinctive Care!

Stress! It’s a word we hear a lot about during the holidays.  And with good reason.  The holidays are not only filled with lots on everyone’s “to do” list but they are also a time filled with lots of emotion and expectation, whether it is anticipation of a special gift or social event or the letdown of a gift that is not so special or an event that didn’t fill our dreams.

But stress is not limited to the holidays.  That’s why Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management of Ridgewood, New Jersey will be participating in a special panel presentation being sponsored by the Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, February 16 from 8 to 10am.  Breakfast will be served to ease the stress of getting out of the house for an early morning meeting!

The panel will focus on stress at all ages.   Bergen County Mental Health will speak on stress in children and adolescents, Valley Healthcare will address stress in adults and Sophia Heftler, RN, CMC, CALA, CDP® from Distinctive Care will talk about the stress that older adults feel as they go through the aging process.  And to ease the stress there will be chair massages and reflexology and lots of networking.

Attendance is not limited to Mahwah Chamber members but is open to the public.  Nearby neighbors in  both Passaic County and Rockland County, NY are welcome to attend.   This stress-relieving breakfast will be held at the Doubletree Inn in Mahwah, New Jersey.  Call (201) 526-5566 to make a reservation.

It is easy to see how important a pet is in the life of a family. What is not as easy to see is how important a role a pet can play in the life of an elderly or ill person. Healing with Love through Pet Therapy will be presented by Sophia Heftler, RN, CMC, CALA of Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management in Ridgewood, NJ on Wednesday, August 4 from 5:30-7:00 PM at Sunrise Senior Living of Wayne in Wayne, NJ. A special guest appearance will be made by our own pet therapy dog, Romeo, a lovable, lap size 5 year old Pomeranian.

Studies have shown that the emotional bond between man and animals is indeed healing. This talk will tell you how the presence of a pet in a loved one’s life can not only offer comfort and dispel loneliness, but can also lower blood pressure, lower heart rate and calm anxiety. Whether it be in the home or in an assisted living facility or a rehabilitation and nursing home, a pet can make the difference, whether it be for one hour or 24 hours. Come learn the special training that is required of therapeutic pets before they earn that special distinction between pets. To join us, call (973) 628-4900. Wine and cheese…coffee and dessert will also be served.
